Disaster Preparedness Offered

December1

In May 2015, The National Network of Libraries of Medicine/Southwestern Regional Program granted an award called Ps (Partners) for PODs to a partnership including the Albuquerque Public Schools,  the UNM Health Sciences Library and Informatics Center, New Mexico Department of Health, and Albuquerque Citizen Corps.

One of the goals of the project is to improve disaster preparedness information awareness. To that end, lesson plans have been developed and distributed and a poster and Disaster ToolKit was distributed to school libraries during September, National Preparedness Month.

The other major goal is to encourage school library staff to consider participating in school-based points of dispensing (PODs).

Points of Dispensing (PODs) are temporary facilities where the public can get needed medications or vaccines in an emergency. The goal is to dispense lifesaving medicines or vaccines to the affected population within 48 hours. The New Mexico Department of Health plans to locate PODs throughout the state; 90% will be in middle schools and high schools.

All school librarians and teachers in New Mexico are encouraged to download and use the attached Disaster Toolkit to educate and inform students and parents about disaster preparation.
