Workshops & Mentoring Programs for NM School Librarians to Begin in January


Thanks to a grant from ABC-CLIO & ALA, the ASL-SIG will begin offering online workshops and mentoring groups beginning in January 2016. Four groups have been chosen to be mentoring groups: Destiny Library Management System, Dossiers, Alexandria Library Management System, and Library Educational Assistants. These mentoring groups will meet on alternating Thursdays at 4 p.m. through the online meeting room at GoToMeeting.

We will also be offering workshops in the following areas: Grant Writing, Weeding, Collection Development, Cultural Activities, Student Aide Training, Basic Philosophies of Librarianship, and Cataloging Basics. The last two workshops will be offered through the Library EA group. The leaders of these workshops are leaders in the state in these areas and have a vast array of knowledge to share.

Objectives as related to Goals of the Association

  1. Provide leadership to initiate, maintain, and enhance library legislation and act on political issues affecting school library interests.
  2. Provide and support educational opportunities for school library personnel.
  3. Communicate the role and value of school libraries and librarian-teachers.
  4. Support and improve networking among school librarians in New Mexico.
  5. Support and promote literacy initiatives for youth including, but not limited to, the Land of Enchantment.
